Here's a little something neat to do.....just drag your mouse over a color and watch the background on this page.....neat. :) (need java to see)
Materials: Bedspread Weight cotton thread (size 10) or smaller if you prefer
Steel Crochet Hook size 8 or 9 (or the size you prefer when using size 10 thread. If using size 20 or 30 thread, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.)

Block (bl): 3 Dc in each of next 3 ch or dc or 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc
Row 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook (skipped chains count as first dc), 1 dc in each of next 2 ch=beg bl made, (1 dc in each of next 3 ch=1 bl) 12 times, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch=1 sp) twice, (1 dc in each of next 3 ch) 13 times; ch 3, turn (counts as dc on next row now and throughout).
Row 2: 1 Dc in each of next 3 dc=1 bl, (ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc=1 sp) 6 times, (1 dc in each of next 3 dc) 4 times, (ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc) twice, (ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, dc in next dc) twice, (ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc) twice, (1 dc in each of next 3 dc) 4 times, (ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc) 6 times, 1 dc in each of last 3 dc; ch 3, turn.
Rows 3 -- 8: Continue pattern according to chart. At the end of Row 8, work edging.
Working around entire perimeter, do: 3 sc in ends of rows, 2 or 3 sc in corners (to keep from curling), 3 sc in each sp, 1 sc in each dc of bottom of bookmark and 1 sc in each dc on top of bookmark. Join. Fasten off and press lightly with iron and a little spray starch.
