Crocheted Medallion #2218 (Crochet...Gotta Love It!)

(From "Star Book of Doilies" Book 22 in the early 1940's). Substitutions will most certainly be necessary. These can be used for many things.

Materials: American Thread Company "Star" or "Gem" mercerized crochet cotton, sizes 20 or 30. No hook size given, but I imagine anywhere from a 9 to a 12 or 13. Motif measures about 3 1/4 inches.

Ch 8, join to form a ring.

1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring, join. (Join each row).

2nd rnd: Ch 6, skip 2 dc, sc in necxt dc, ch 6, repeat from beginning 6 times, join.

3rd rnd: Ch 1,4 sc in loop, ch 3, 4 sc in same loop and repeat from beginning all around.

4th rnd: Sl st into ch 3,ch 4, tr c in the same loop leaving the last st on needle, tr c in the same loop leaving the last st on needle, thread over and take off all loops at once, this makes the cluster, ch 5, 3 tr c cluster in the same loop, * ch 5, cluster st in the next ch 3 loop, ch 5, cluster st in the same loop. Repeat from beginning all around.

5th rnd: Ch 4, cluster st in same space,ch 1, * work a cluster st in the top of the next cluster st, ch 3, dc in center st of ch, ch 3, dc in the same st of ch, ch 3, cluster st in next cluster st, ch 1, repeat from * all around.

6th rnd: Sl st between cluster sts, * ch 7, sc in ch 3 between the 2 dc of last row, ch 7, sc between cluster sts, repeat from * all around.

7th rnd: Ch 1, work 4 sc, ch 4, 2 sc,ch 4, 4 sc over each loop.

8th rnd: Sl st in center of picot, ch 6, dc in next picot, * ch 5, dc in next picot, ch 3, dc in next picot, repeat from * all around.

9th rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in loop, ch 4, sc in top of last dc for picot, 3 dc in same loop, ch 4, dc in top of last dc for picot, * ch 3, sc i ch, ch 4, sc in same ch, ch 7,sl st in 4th st from hook for picot, 3 dc in next loop,ch 4, sc in top of last dc for picot, 3 dc in same loop, ch 4, sc in top of last dc for picot, repeat from * all around.

Crocheted medallions can be used for dress or shirt trimming or collar and cuff trims or as household decorations or coasters.
